There are numerous stories in the media about the novel coronavirus known as COVID-19. With the first documented case of the infection in the triangle area, we want to provide a brief update for you.

COVID-19 is an infection that spreads through respiratory droplets of infected patients when they cough or sneeze. It produces primary symptoms of fever, cough and shortness of breath. Preventive measures are common sense and include frequent handwashing with soap and water, avoid touching your face with unwashed hands, avoid close contact with people who are sick, and cover your mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.

Recent travel to endemic affected areas identified by the CDC (https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/index.html) and those with known or strongly suspected contact are at high risk of getting the infection. Patient over the age of 70, those with chronic respiratory disease, heart disease, diabetes or renal disease and those undergoing cancer therapy are at higher risk for complication if they get the infection. Currently, testing for COVID-19 is limited to patients meeting specific risk and criteria and not available in the outpatient clinics. As a viral illness, there is no specific treatment.

Please call us if you have fever, cough or are short of breath and have additional travel risk or concerns. For most, symptoms are mild and supportive treatment will be recommended. We will also recommend that you stay home for at least until 24 hours after your symptoms go away. If needed, we can see you in the office with appropriate precautions including a facemask for your safety and the safety of others.

We will provide updates as they become available. More information and links can be viewed on the Duke Health website at https://www.dukehealth.org. You can contact us directly through your Duke MyChart link.
