As you undoubtedly have heard in the news media, this years’ flu season is here. This is not fake news. The flu season has peaked earlier with a significant increase in reported cases, hospitalizations and deaths over last year.

The predominant influenza virus is influenza A (H3N2). While this virus is part of the 2017-2018 vaccine, the current mutation appears to be a particularly virulent strain.

You can reduce your risk for infection by getting the flu shot if you have not already done so.

The Center for Disease Control outlines everyday actions for prevention including:

  • Avoiding contact with sick people
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth
  • While sick, limit your contact with others and stay home

Flu-like symptoms may include the sudden onset of fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Some people also may have vomiting and diarrhea.

Antiviral medication can minimize and shorten your illness and works best if started within 2 days of getting sick. Treatment is recommended for high risk patients including adults aged 65 and older, persons with chronic lung, heart, kidney and liver disease. Additionally, persons with neurological conditions, those who are immunosuppressed or with a body mass index >40 should be treated.

Stay well. Contact us early if you have concerns.
