The holiday season is here. All around, advertising has extended the season from Halloween through New Year’s and for many, it may seem like one big blur. During this season, our schedules change with additional social gatherings, family events, and traveling. Additional environment cues with colder weather and changes in daylight seems to modify our habits. All of this may create angst for some as we attempt to balance our year long struggle with diet and weight with holiday celebrations. As we extend wishes and good will during the holiday season, we should be careful not extend and expand our waistline.
Studies have shown that our weight on average increases 0.2 percent over Thanksgiving and another 0.7 percent between Christmas and New Year’s. Unfortunately, this gift is something that most have difficulties returning. It may take up to 6 months to lose this weight and for some, we lose only about half of the weigh gained. This only resets our metabolism and makes it harder for the next season (remember that summer is around the corner).
All is not lost. We should celebrate the season but be thoughtful in both diet and exercise. Remain positive and focus on what we can do and not on what we cannot do. Thoughtful food choices in foods, smaller portions and moderation in desserts and alcohol is important. Perform routine exercise that you enjoy to shift the focus away from food. Doing this for several short 10 minute intervals during the day is helpful. All of these small steps and focus on diet and exercise will help you enjoy the holiday season.
