It's Flu Season; Why get the Vaccine?
The flu can be deadly, especially for the very young, the very old, those with chronic disease and patients who are immunocompromised. The most effective way to prevent you from getting the flu, and spreading it to others, is to get the flu shot each year.
Flu Facts:
- The CDC recommends that anyone over 6 months of age be vaccinated as early as possible.
- The flu vaccine provides protection that lasts through the flu season so it’s best to get it early.
- Flu vaccination effectiveness gradually decreases over time, so it is important to get a flu shot each year.
- The flu shot does not contain a live virus, and will not cause you to get the flu.
- Even healthy people, including children and young adults, can get very sick from the flu. An individual can be infected with the flu and spread it prior to developing symptoms. The earlier you get vaccinated, the sooner you start building immunity to the illness that can not only make you sick, but can also cause you to make others sick.
Flu Symptoms:
- Symptoms of the flu are: fever, coughing, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, headaches, body aches, chills and fatigue. Some strains may also cause vomiting and/or diarrhea.
- If you experience any of these symptoms, notify your primary care physician and follow medical advice.
- If you have flu-like symptoms, get plenty of rest and fluids.
Ideal times to schedule your vaccines are Monday, Thursday and Friday afternoons between 1:30-3:30 pm. In being mindful of your time, scheduling in advance is appreciated, but not necessary. Please feel free to call our office at 919-660-6746 with any questions.
