 Tis the season…Lessen the Stress
The holidays can be a time for more of everything…more social engagements, more family functions, more food, and more gift giving and receiving.  While there is much joy and excitement to be had, the expectations we place on ourselves can sometimes add to our stress instead of allowing us to be present in appreciating the gift of each moment.  In the midst of holiday activities, remember what is important and take the time to care for yourself so that you can enjoy this special time.  Here is a link from the American Psychological Association with more tips about making the most of the holidays.

The holiday season can also make keeping up with a regular workout routine a challenge; between the cold weather, shorter daylight hours, traveling to visit family, delicious feasts and hectic shopping schedules, squeezing in time for physical activity is hard work!  Thirty minutes of physical activity each day can keep your weight gain under control during this time of overindulgence that we are all guilty of. Exercise will also help with the stress that we usually tend to experience during the holidays.  Exercise doesn’t have to be something exhausting or strenuous, and there are plenty of ways to keep you active during the holidays. Here are a few to consider and give a try!

  1. Sign up for a race or competition, so that you can stay motivated to stay in shape over the holidays. Invite your friends and family members to participate, this way you all are accountable to show up.
  2. When you are getting out and about spending money on gifts this holiday season, simply lace up your sneakers and powerwalk between errands and while you are shopping.
  3. Take advantage of the time off work and get outside and do that yardwork that you have wanted to get done! Whether it’s raking leaves or shoveling snow, yard work is an unexpected way to get the heart rate up and work out major muscle groups.
  4. Encourage a 30-minute family walk around the neighborhood after each meal. This way you will squeeze in a light workout and catch up with family members at the same time!
  5. Work out with your mobile device or game system your kids may have. Download app(s) or video(s) for your mobile device (iPad, iPhone, etc.) or watch an online video that will help you get moving.

Wishing you and yours a good holiday season and a prosperous new year!
