September 2016
The fall season is here and with the change in weather, we all should prepare for the upcoming influenza season.

Influenza is a contagious airborne viral infection that attacks the lungs, nose and throat. The best defense against influenza is to receive an annual vaccination. This year’s vaccine targets two A strains of influenza, H1N1 and H3N2, along with the Brisbane B-strain. People 65 and older qualify for the more powerful trivalent vaccine or a quadrivalent vaccine that also targets a second B-strain. The “nasal spray” flu vaccine, will not be used during the upcoming flu season.

Influenza vaccination is strongly recommended for persons who are at increased risk for severe complications from influenza including:

  • all children aged 6 through 59 months
  • all persons aged ≥50 years
  • adults and children who have chronic pulmonary or cardiovascular, renal, hepatic, neurologic, hematologic, or metabolic disorders (including diabetes mellitus)
  • residents of nursing homes and other long-term care facilities
  • persons who live with or care for persons at higher risk for influenza-related complications

Please contact our office if you have questions at 919-660-6746 or drop by our office for your flu vaccine without an appointment.

While it is never too late to get a vaccine, it is recommended that you receive your vaccine by the end of October for best protection.

Additional information about influenza can be found on the CDC website at: http://www.cdc.gov/flu/
