Health News from Your Duke Signature Care Physician

With the summer season, many of us will be traveling for vacation. If you are travelling locally, nationally or internationally, prepare and protect yourself to stay safe and healthy. Here are a few helpful tips to ensure an enjoyable trip:

  • Know your health needs and limitations. Review your medical history with your physician and discuss any concerns before you leave.
  • Contact your physician for specific travel recommendations and schedule vaccinations several weeks in advance.
  • Plan ahead to make sure you have enough medications for your trip.
  • Wear your seat belt and avoid using your cell phone while driving.
  • Stay hydrated, take frequent breaks and move around if traveling for long distances to reduce the risk for leg clots.
  • Eat a well-balanced diet, avoid frequent snacking or overeating. Stay active and limit your alcohol intake.
  • Apply and reapply sunscreen often and avoid excessive sun exposure.
  • Use appropriate insect repellent and protective clothing to minimize insect bites.
  • Know your emergency contacts and have the information handy.
  • International travelers should take extra precautions and plan ahead. Be aware that your health insurance plan may not cover you while traveling abroad.  Check with your insurance carrier and consider travelers insurance to cover unexpected health needs.
