Eyes on the Future: Microfluidic Lenses Monitor Health and Deliver Medication

Microfluidic contact lenses (MCLs) are redefining what it means to see clearly--by doing much more than correcting vision. These next-generation lenses act as compact health monitors and drug delivery devices, right on the eye's surface. Through integrated microchannels and sensor arrays, MCLs can analyze tear fluid, track changes in intraocular pressure, and release medications with precision--without requiring external power or invasive procedures. Offering low sample volumes and high patient compliance, MCLs are becoming a promising solution for continuous, noninvasive health monitoring. Now, breakthroughs in laser patterning, 3D printing, and polymer engineering are overcoming the hurdles of miniaturization and scalability, paving the way for wearable medical tools that are as unobtrusive as they are effective.
