Fewer Head Injuries, Not Less Abuse: COVID's Hidden Toll

Child physical abuse (CPA) remained alarmingly consistent during the COVID-19 pandemic, despite shifts in injury patterns. A recent study analyzing skeletal survey data before and during the pandemic found that while overall abuse incidence remained stable, cases of intracranial and retinal hemorrhages significantly declined. These findings suggest changes in the nature, reporting, or detection of abuse during pandemic conditions, raising concerns about underdiagnosis and the evolving profile of physical harm inflicted on vulnerable children.
