Catheter-Free Approach to VUR Testing Shows Early Feasibility

For decades, the gold standard for diagnosing vesicoureteral reflux (VUR)--the backward flow of urine into the ureters or kidneys--has been a voiding cystourethrogram (VCUG). But that X-ray test exposes patients to radiation and requires catheterization, resulting in significant distress for young children, families, and providers. Now, Urology researchers at Children's Hospital Los Angeles, in collaboration with chemists and engineers at USC, are exploring a novel alternative: nanoparticles, bubbles, and ultrasound. Recently, the team published results in the Journal of Pediatric Urology- Opens in a new window showing the feasibility of this approach in early models.
