A Shape-Shifting Scaffold That Fights Infection and Rebuilds Bone

Infectious bone defects remain one of the most difficult challenges in orthopedic medicine, as persistent bacterial invasion and excessive inflammation severely impair bone regeneration. A new study introduces a multifunctional, 3D-printed shape-memory scaffold designed to sequentially address these barriers. The scaffold automatically adapts to irregular bone defects at body temperature, eliminates bacterial pathogens, modulates the inflammatory immune microenvironment, and promotes new bone formation. By integrating structural adaptability with antibacterial, immunoregulatory, and osteogenic functions in a single implant, this approach demonstrates a promising strategy for restoring bone integrity in complex infected environments where conventional grafts and implants often fail.
