Driving Data and Vehicle Sensors Help Detect Early Cognitive Decline

Every trip behind the wheel may quietly reveal early signs of cognitive decline. Researchers analyzed nearly 4,800 real-world trips from older drivers using in-vehicle sensors and cognitive testing. They found that early cognitive impairment was linked to less consistent pedal control, shorter trips and less efficient speed regulation. No single behavior was decisive; the combination of subtle driving changes that best distinguished cognitively impaired from unimpaired drivers, suggesting everyday driving could serve as an early warning tool.
