Two Surgical Paths, One Hope: Long-Term Recovery After Childhood Caustic Esophageal Injury

Accidental ingestion of caustic substances can alter a child's life in an instant, damaging the esophagus and leaving lasting nutritional sequelae, respiratory complications, and psychosocial impairments. A new study shows that two major reconstructive options--colonic pedicled flap and gastric tube replacement--can both support satisfactory long-term recovery after severe pediatric caustic injury. Looking far beyond the operating room, the researchers examine digestive symptoms, physical capacity, diet, and psychosocial well-being. Their findings suggest that although the two techniques perform similarly in most functional outcomes, many patients still live with swallowing-related adaptations, reminding clinicians that recovery is not defined by surgery alone but by how children eat, move, feel, and grow afterward.
