AI Foundation Models Offer a New Vision for Eye Care

Vision and vision-language foundation models are emerging as powerful tools for ophthalmic diagnosis, screening, and clinical decision support. Trained on large-scale image and text datasets, these models can identify complex patterns across fundus photographs, optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans, ocular surface images, clinical records, and other data sources. A new systematic review summarizes their use in retinal diseases, glaucoma, ocular surface tumors, and rare eye conditions. The review suggests that foundation models can deliver strong diagnostic performance, adapt to new tasks with limited labeled data, and support more flexible multimodal workflows for future eye care.
