Virtual Eyes in the Operating Room: AI Detects Surgical Safety Landmark Across Hospitals

A remotely operated artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm has successfully identified the critical view of safety (CVS)--the key anatomical landmark that prevents bile duct injury--during live laparoscopic cholecystectomy in pediatric patients. In a prospective study of 50 children and adolescents, the AI system achieved 100% agreement with expert surgeons, detecting when all safety criteria were met and issuing real-time alerts. This approach is the first to combine AI with teleconferencing for pediatric gallbladder surgery, offering a potential new layer of intraoperative guidance without requiring specialized hardware at the operating site, which could prove especially valuable in lower-resource settings.
