Young Adults' Attention to Alcohol Cues in their Environments is Highly Variable and Linked to Their Craving and Drinking, Potentially Informing Interventions

The amount of attention paid to alcohol cues is a dynamic process among young adults prone to heavy drinking and predicts their urge to get drunk as well as their alcohol use that day, according to a new study involving participants recruited from Emergency Departments. Attentional bias (AB) toward alcohol cues is thought to reflect automatic motivational processes that contribute to craving and heavy drinking--though this bias may be variable in each person, rather than a stable trait. Understanding how alcohol-related AB manifests in daily life is key to developing effective prevention and treatment approaches. For the study in Alcohol: Clinical & Experimental Research, investigators examined how alcohol AB functions within individuals and between people.
