Salt-Purified Seaweed Fucoidan Shows Promising Anti-Allergic Activity

A research team has identified a purified fucoidan fraction from the edible brown alga Laminaria japonica that shows strong anti-allergic activity in laboratory cell models. The fraction, known as LJF-2, was enriched in sulfate groups, uronic acids, and rhamnose and inhibited inflammatory responses in macrophages while reducing mast-cell activation and histamine release. By linking these biological effects to specific structural features, the findings provide a foundation for developing fucoidan-based functional foods, dietary supplements, or natural agents for preventing and managing food allergies.
