Psycho-Cardiovascular Interaction Network Links Mental Health and Heart Disease

A new review proposes the psycho-cardiovascular interaction network (PCIN), a framework that links psychological and psychiatric factors with cardiovascular health and disease. The review integrates epidemiological evidence, system-level mechanisms, and molecular signaling pathways to explain how depression, anxiety, chronic stress, and other mental health conditions may contribute to cardiovascular disease (CVD), and vice versa. It focuses on five representative pathways--brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), prokineticin (PROK)/prokineticin receptor (PKR), mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT)/5-HT2A receptor (5-HT2A-R), and NOD-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome signaling--and discusses integrated prevention and treatment strategies.
