FAU Study Uses Raman Spectroscopy and AI to Detect Skin Cancer

Raman spectroscopy combined with machine learning could offer a rapid, non-invasive way to detect skin cancer. Analyzing nearly 1,000 spectra from more than 50 samples, researchers found machine-learning models correctly classified normal skin, basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma about 81% to 84% of the time. The models more reliably distinguished cancerous from normal tissue than different cancer types, highlighting the approach's potential for future skin cancer diagnosis.
