RUNX1 drives stress-resistant POSTN+ fibroblasts in skin fibrosis

A new study has identified RUNX1 (RUNX family transcription factor 1) as a key driver of a harmful fibroblast state in skin fibrosis. The work shows that these cells adapt to stress, avoid a form of cell death called ferroptosis, and promote blood vessel changes. It also suggests that berberine (BBR), a natural compound, may help reduce scarring. The findings could help explain why fibrotic skin diseases and scars persist, and they point to a possible treatment strategy. The study links this cell state to several scarring and fibrotic skin conditions with limited targeted options. Together, the results highlight RUNX1 and its downstream signals as potential targets for future therapies.
